Serve & Return

Serve & Return is a simple back-and-forth interaction.
When a child looks, points, gestures, or makes a sound (a serve), the adult responds with interest (a return).
These tiny exchanges build connection, language, and confidence.

How caregivers can use serve & return

Teachers, daycare workers, nannies, etc!

  • Child points at a block
→ “Block! You found the red block — wow!” (pause and wait for their next move)

  • Child pats the table rhythmically
→ Copy the same beat, then add a clap. (wait — let them take the next turn)

  • Child says “ba!”
→ “Ba! You used your voice! Baaaall? Baaaby? Baaa-na-na?” (playfully explore sounds)

  • Child hands you a toy
→ “You gave it to me — thank you. Now it’s your turn!” (hand it back to them)

The goal isn’t performance — it’s connection.
