Movement Imitation

Movement Imitation builds coordination, attention, and shared focus. When children copy your movement — or when you copy theirs — you’re strengthening motor planning and turn-taking skills.

How caregivers can use movement imitation

Teachers, daycare workers, nannies, etc!

  • Caregiver stretches arms up
→ “Reach up to the sky!”

  • Child wiggles shoulders
→ Wiggle with them and add a gentle clap.

  • Transition time
→ “Let’s march to the sink. Step, step, step!”

  • Waiting in line
→ “Tap your knees with me — tap, tap, tap.”

Movement + Imitation = Connection + Regulation
