Child looks upset
→ “You’re frustrated. Do you need space or help?” -
Child throws a toy
→ “You’re angry. You wanted it to work.” -
Child starts crying
→ “You’re sad. I’m here.” -
Child smiles and jumps
→ “You’re excited! You’re proud of yourself!”
Naming the feeling helps the child feel understood — which calms their nervous system.
