Emotion Coaching

Emotion Coaching is helping a child understand their feelings by naming what you see. Instead of fixing the feeling or distracting them, you pause, reflect the emotion, and offer support. When children hear language for their feelings, they learn how to manage them — not just react.

How caregivers can use emotion coaching

Teachers, daycare workers, nannies, etc!

  • Child looks upset
→ “You’re frustrated. Do you need space or help?”

  • Child throws a toy
→ “You’re angry. You wanted it to work.”

  • Child starts crying
    → “You’re sad. I’m here.”

  • Child smiles and jumps
    → “You’re excited! You’re proud of yourself!”

Naming the feeling helps the child feel understood — which calms their nervous system.
