Routine Narration

Routine Narration means describing what’s happening step-by-step as a child moves through a task or transition. Predictable language helps children know what to expect, reduces overwhelm, and supports independence.

How caregivers can use routine narration

  • Getting ready to go outside
→ “First we get our shoes. Then we put them on. Last, we open the door.”

  • During snack
→ “First we wash hands. Then we sit. Last, we eat.”

  • Cleaning up toys
→ “First we pick up blocks. Then cars. Last, books.”

Predictability reduces stress and builds confidence during transitions.
